Growing up in Wisconsin, I went to a lot of Polish weddings as a kid. At least I thought they were Polish because they danced the polka at each one.
I dance a great polka.
So when I met Daria and Grzegorz to talk about their wedding and found out they are both Polish, naturally my first question was, ‘Will there be polka!?’.
Nope. Turns out that polka, like spaghetti and meatballs, Irish pubs, and Tex-Mex food, is just an American invention made up by the americanized immigrants from around the world who’ve made their home here.
It was no great loss to the party however. Seeing Daria and Grzegorz party with their friends was an epic spectacle. These guys were professional partiers. From the spontaneous song the whole of the guests launched into after their toasts, to the traditional Polish blessing of the marriage, to the bead and salt and vodka the bride and groom ate to join their families together, Daria and Grzegorz’ wedding was a gorgeous balance of fun and tradition.
I still did the polka by myself in the corner when no one was looking.
